Project: Atmospheric Flash Tank (Major Energy Project)

The Brief

SP McLean was approached by Oil & Gas Technologies (OGT) to manufacture vessels relating to a major energy project – in line with various internal and specific heat shield requirements.

With this brief, these tanks were designed and manufactured collectively with OGT offering efficiency and reliability in steam and condensate systems. Our atmospheric flash tank is engineered to effectively separate steam and condensate, optimising energy recovery and minimising heat loss.

Outcomes

Energy recovery

When high-pressure condensate is introduced into the flash tank, the pressure drop causes a portion of the condensate to vaporise into steam. Instead of being vented to the atmosphere, this flash steam can subsequently be diverted for use in different operations, such as heating or powering turbines. By reusing thermal energy, the need for additional fuel or energy inputs is greatly reduced, which results in significant energy savings and improves the steam system’s overall efficiency.

High steam quality

The flash tank separates steam from condensate, generating steam with very low moisture content. High-quality steam is essential for efficient operation of equipment like turbines, and heat exchangers as it ensures better heat transfer and reduces the risk of water hammer and corrosion. This high-quality steam supports optimal performance and longevity of steam-driven machinery.

Reduced maintenance costs

By effectively managing and removing condensate, the flash tank prevents issues such as corrosion, water hammer, and scaling in steam systems. These problems, if left unchecked, can lead to frequent breakdowns and costly repairs. Proper condensate management ensures smoother operation and longer life for steam system components, reducing the need for regular maintenance and lowering associated operational costs.

Water conservation

The flash tank captures and reuses condensed water, which would otherwise be wasted. This recycling process reduces the need for fresh make-up water in the steam system. By conserving water, the system not only saves on water costs but also helps in preserving local water resources, making the operation more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Environmental sustainability

The energy-efficient operation of the flash tank leads to lower fuel consumption, which in turn reduces the amount of greenhouse gases produced. Additionally, by conserving water and reusing condensate, the system minimises the environmental impact associated with water extraction and treatment. These practices contribute to a more sustainable operation, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and promote environmental stewardship.
